Conference Themes & Sub-Themes

The water-energy-food nexus is central to concerns about water, energy and food security in Southern Africa. The three areas are interlinked, meaning that actions in one sector are likely to have reciprocal impacts on other areas, resulting in conflicts or competition. An integrated and aligned approach is required to address all the three areas simultaneously.

Manifesting synergies between governments, institutions, disciplines, policy-makers and other stakeholders, both globally and in the SADC region is a key requirement. This will assist in mobilizing a synchronized and harmonized approach in solving issues and related challenges. Establishing synergies directly relates to SDG 17 “Partnerships for the Goals”, with particular emphasis on the importance of partnerships and collaborations in pursuing the SDGs.

Climate change adaptation and mitigation measures have been widely articulated globally. However, do these measures apply to African contexts and are they practical solutions for Africa? There is an urgent need to “Africanise” climate impact responses that are suited to Africa and African people, with a particular focus on southern Africa. This is linked to SDG 13
“Climate Action”.

While there is a growing focus on meeting growing human needs, the resources on which we depend are unequivocally embedded in ecological systems. Biodiversity and ecosystems are highly valuable to human civilization as they provide numerous ecosystem services and natural resource provisioning. However, biodiversity resources such as fisheries and forests are being depleted at alarming rates. It is therefore, critical that we conserve such resources and ensure that they are sustainably used. SDG 14 “Life Below Water” and SDG 15 “Life on Land” highlight the importance of ecosystems in sustainability.

  1. Our economies and societies are built on linear systems that are inefficient and unsustainable. Issues such as mass food wastage, resource exploitation and depletion, pollution and social inequalities arise from linear systems. The notion of circular green and blue economies aim to change the status quo. This relates to SDG 11 “Sustainable Cities and Communities” and SDG 12 “Responsible Consumption and Production”.
